Betty and Barney Hills' Close Encounter Route Self-Guided Tour

1. Start your journey at the Mount Cleveland Scenic Picnic Area located on US Hwy. 3, just four miles south of Twin Mountain. This was the Hills' initial observational stop. Using binoculars, Betty spotted an unusual craft moving across the moon's surface. She described it as oddly shaped, emitting flashes of multicolored lights. Barney observed the craft flying westward, rapidly descending toward him without any apparent turn.

2. Continue south on US 3 for 3.5 miles until you reach Franconia Notch. Take Exit 34B (towards Cannon Mt. Tramway/Old Man Historic Site) and direct your path towards the area around the Hugh Gallen Bridge. The Hills crossed over this bridge into Franconia Notch on September 19, 1961. As you look forward, keep an eye on Cannon Mountain; the craft appeared to soar above the summit of Cannon Mountain.

3. Drive to the Old Man Historic Site and park in the spacious parking lot provided. Locate the trail that will lead you to the historic site. (It's handicap accessible from the lower parking lot.) On September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney paused alongside US Hwy. 3 (now known as Interstate 93), exiting their 1957 Chevy. They noticed the craft hovering near the Old Man's 48-foot profile, measuring nearly twice its length. The rotating vehicle seemed illuminated on only one side. Shortly after, it started moving in a stair-step pattern, bouncing back and forth like a yoyo—extending outward swiftly and retracting to its original position just as quickly.

4. Proceed south on Interstate 93 through Franconia Notch. Betty and Barney testified regarding how the craft mirrored their vehicle, flying only a few hundred feet above them with its stair-step movements.

5. Although they stopped momentarily at the Flume George, they returned to US Highway 3 and headed south toward the Indian Head Resort. Don't forget to stop at the Indian Head Resort to see the Hills' Historical marker set up by the State of NH. Make sure to capture a photo of yourself by the marker.

6. Head south on US Hwy. 3 until you reach the Notch Express Irving Gas Station. Remarkably, the anomalous aerial vehicle had been shadowing the Hills' 1957 Chevy for 12.4 miles when, in an eerie twist, just 1.4 miles south of the resort, the craft advanced suddenly and descended swiftly towards them.

7. Stop at the Notch Express Irving Gas Station located on the right. This establishment did not exist in 1961, nor did many of the buildings found along the route. To the left (east), only a handful of apple trees and a roadside farm stand were present. At that time, the I-93 Interstate had not yet extended this far north.

Around midnight, the UFO descended sharply to the right of the Hills' vehicle. Barney brought the 1957 Chevy to a swift stop right in the road. The massive, silent, disk-shaped craft now loomed less than 200 feet above them. He opened his door and stepped onto the pavement. Peering through binoculars, he beheld a motionless craft hovering menacingly above. It had ceased its spinning and an intense blue-white light pierced through its windows.

Within moments, the craft smoothly glided into the field across the street, descending even lower. Barney pursued it into the field, where, through his binoculars, he spotted figures that seemed "somehow not human," gazing intently down at him from a series of windows lining the forward edge of the aerial vehicle.

Suddenly, all but one figure pivoted and advanced toward what seemed to be a control panel. They raised their arms, and something began to emerge from the bottom of the craft. At that moment, Barney felt an overwhelming terror. He raced back to the car, shouting at Betty that they needed to leave immediately, or they would surely be captured.

As he entered the car he looked toward the craft, which was moving in his direction. He shifted the car into gear and sped down the highway. (This was part of Barney's conscious memory and was not brought forth by hypnosis for the first time.)

8. Continue south to Clark’s Trading Post. Betty rolled down her window and peered upward but but saw only darkness. Later, she realized that the craft had been directly above them.

Almost immediately, a series of code-like buzzing sounds triggered a vibration in their vehicle, enveloping the couple in a strange tingling sensation. Barney compared the noises to the sound of a tuning fork that had been unintentionally dropped.

9. As if merely a blink of an eye had occurred, they suddenly realized they were 35 miles south of their last position on US 3, with hazy recollections of the events that had unfolded in between. They recalled navigating a unfamiliar, dirt road bordered by towering trees, encountering a roadblock, and witnessing a blazing orb on the ground. This enigmatic location eluded them for years, until they finally discovered it following their hypnosis sessions with Dr. Benjamin Simon.

9.To reach the site of the abduction, head south for 10 miles. Turn left onto Cross Road, crossing the Thornton Memorial Bridge. At the stop sign, make a right onto NH-175 S. Continue for half a mile, then take a left onto Mill Brook Road. Follow the curve to the location where, late on the night of September 19, 1961, non-human entities obstructed the road. (Please remain inside your vehicle to avoid disturbing the current residents.) The road is now paved and flanked by houses and new side streets. Back in 1961, it was an unpaved, barren area. The craft made its landing in a sandy patch to the left side of the road.

The Hills consistently remembered their close encounter, the buzzing sounds on the trunk of their car, a new road, a fiery orb that seemed to be sitting on the ground, and a roadblock. However, they did not remember the abduction or what happened to them on the craft.
