The Astonishing Remainder of the Hills enigmatic journey

September 20, 1961: Just after midnight, Barney hastily departed from the location of the strange encounter, racing toward his parked car. As he vaulted into the vehicle, he glanced back to catch sight of the enigmatic craft moving closer. He accelerated down US Highway 3, urging Betty to lower her window and take a look. She leaned her head out, but was met only with darkness; there were no lights from the craft, no stars, just an overwhelming void. They had driven just five or six blocks when they were startled by a series of buzzing sounds that seemed to strike the trunk of their car. Barney likened these tones to the resonating sound of a tuning fork that had been dropped. In an instant, they were enveloped by a strange vibration and an unsettling sensation of electricity within the car. Betty reached to feel the metal, testing for any electric current but felt nothing. It was only later that she realized the craft had been hovering silently right above their vehicle.

As if only a fleeting moment had elapsed, the Hill suddenly realized that they were now 35 miles south of their former position in Lincoln. A new series of codelike buzzing sounds had snapped them to full awareness. Betty turned to Barney and asked, "Do you believe in flying saucers?" To which he responded, "Don't be ridiculous! That wasn't a flying saucer." Barney had always been a staunch skeptic before this unsettling experience, frequently teasing Betty with his dismissive reply of "Don't be ridiculous." In fact, he had a strong aversion to the term "flying saucer."

Their memories remained hazy, yet they recalled being on a dirt road surrounded by tall trees, a large, fiery orb that appeared to be resting on the ground, and an ominous roadblock. Betty consistently remembered more than Barney, likely due to the extraterrestrials exerting more control over him.

Upon arriving home, Betty realized her watch had stopped functioning. Unaware that it was broken, she entered and reset it to match the time displayed on her clock: 5:16. Barney followed suit. She had previously confirmed the time while in Colebrook, NH, and near Cannon Mountain, just north of the close encounter field in Lincoln, and her watch had been working properly then. However, upon their arrival home, it turned out that both the Hills' watches were no longer working.

Betty also observed that her dress was damaged, with the zipper torn and the lining ripped from the waist down to the hem. Later on, she discovered pink powder scattered across part of it. This substance has been analyzed at several scientific labs. Furthermore, Barney found a severed leather strap from his binoculars, the tops of his shoes were noticeably worn down, and his dress slacks had traces of plant matter. He also felt soreness at the back of his neck.

The couple felt unusually "clammy", a sensation far dirtier than what they would typically experience after a regular vacation drive. They took refreshing long showers, had breakfast, and sketched the images of the craft that they had observed in Lincoln. Afterward, they retreated for some well-deserved rest.

Later that day, Betty decided to call her sister Janet. During their chat, she asked Janet to discreetly consult her neighbor, who was a physicist. He advised her to take a compass to her vehicle to observe how the needle would behave. Upon inspection, she found 12-18 new shiny spots on the trunk of her 1957 Chevy Bel Air, each about the size of half dollars, located where they had heard the buzzing sounds. When a compass was placed over these areas, the needle spun wildly, indicating the presence of a magnetic field. Several witnesses were able to see these peculiar spots.
